Island Savings Community Endowment
In 2014 when Island Savings merged with First West Credit Union, the Island Savings board of directors gifted $2 million to the First West Foundation for the creation of the Island Savings Community Endowment as a lasting legacy to support Island Savings’ communities. The credit union will continue to grow this endowment by donating a portion of its profits annually.
Distributions from the endowment began early 2016 and the Island Savings Regional Council, which oversees the endowment, established the funding focus for the grants as “Promoting Resilient and Sustainable Island Communities".
More specifically, the Island Savings Community Endowment will enhance Island Savings communities by funding programming that improves people’s capacity and ability to care for themselves and their families; to learn new skills and become resilient in the face of change and challenge; and to become resourceful and self-sufficient. The fund will also support charitable programming that enhances environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Members are also welcomed to support the Island Savings Community Endowment through donations. All gifts above $10 are eligible for a charitable tax receipt and because the Credit Union supports the administrative needs of the Foundation, 100% of donations go toward building the endowment for greater community support.
In addition to the Island Savings Community Endowment, the First West Foundation also manages a number of other endowment funds including:
- Valley First Community Endowment
- Enderby & District Financial Community Endowment
- Envision-Region Employees' Endowment
- Peter Podovinikoff Scholarship Endowment
- Frank Jamieson Memorial Endowment
- Envision Financial Community Endowment
- SOS Children’s Village Agency Fund
- Gord and Enrica Huston Endowment
- Ben H. Voth Legacy Endowment
- Sally O’Sullivan Legacy Endowment
- Haukeland Family Legacy Endowment
- Peter Bell Legacy Endowment
