Big Brothers Big Sisters

In-School Mentoring has positive impact on our communities

Since 2010, Island Savings partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters has provided more than $500,000 in financial support and thousands of hours of volunteerism to their agencies to help improve the lives of children and their families in our trade area.

Funds support the In-School Mentoring program, which matches at-risk children with trained mentors and focuses on activities that support positive relationships, resiliency, social development and success in school. For one hour a week, mentors meet with their mentee and engage in activities such as board games, crafts or simply hanging out on school grounds.

Island Savings contributions have allowed the program to grow substantially with more than 1,800 matches in our communities from Victoria and the Gulf Islands to Nanaimo. The positive impact of the programming is significant. Studies show that In-School Mentoring:

  • helps kids stay in school
  • avoid risky behaviour such as bullying
  • and grow up having more respect for family, peers and community

Island Savings employees have contributed greatly to the partnership and have provided leadership serving as Board members and mentors themselves. Staff also regularly volunteer their time for fundraisers and Big Brothers Big Sisters events, including the annual Bowl for Kids' Sake.
