Growing Island Families Together

Since 2009 Island Savings' Community Crew has provided thousands of hours of support to community groups and organizations that help to improve the quality of life for Island families. Each year our Community Crew team along with Island Savings mascot Penny the Owl helps to spread joy and raise funds at family friendly community events through their professionalism, hard work and enthusiasm.

Some of the activities the crew is most commonly requested to assist with include:

  • Face painting
  • Leading children’s arts and crafts
  • Food service delivery and cookie decorating
  • Hosting family-friendly games
  • Taking photos and visits with Penny the Owl
  • Event greeting and parking attendants
  • Tickets sales and registration service
  • Water station support for community walks and runs

Island Savings' Community Crew Services are provided free of charge to eligible community groups and organizations. In 2018 they will operate between May 22 and September 3. If you are interested in having the Island Savings Community Crew assist your group with an upcoming event or initiative in support of Island families, please complete a GIFT application form.

Lead Well. Youth internships supporting local non-profits.

2016 marked the evolution of Island Savings’ Community Crew program. After a decade of providing valuable in-kind support for family-friendly events around our islands, Island Savings has introduced a new, value-add internship to the program. In July and August our crew members were paired with a non-profit based in the Cowichan Valley and provided their talent and time free of charge as paid employees of our organization.

If you are or know a youth living in Duncan, BC and currently enrolled in high school (grades 10 through 12), contact us to learn more about how to join the crew. Email Chris Waddell –

Our Non-profit partnerships

Cowichan Valley Basket Society: Our team worked at the food bank and soup kitchen in Duncan to get a better understanding on the issue of hunger in the Cowichan Region and how the Basket Society operates and provides support.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cowichan Valley: Big Brothers Big Sisters and Island Savings Community Crew teamed up to offer a Go Girls program for girls’ ages 11-14 years that explores Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds.

Cowichan Green Community Society: Our crew were involved in a number of projects CGCS delivered including working in their community garden at Kin Park, canning and preserving local fruits and vegetables and helping with their Summer Kid’s camp where children learn how to grow, cook and eat fresh local food.

Meet the 2017 Community Crew

Faith Island Savings Community Crew

Faith Lee, 16 years, Ladysmith

“In 5 years I will be 21, hopefully playing volleyball for a university team and studying something that makes me happy. Through my internship with Cowichan Green Community I have learned the dynamics of an office and how to speak to kids in a way that they will understand. Anyone is capable of helping nonprofits you just need to find one you’re passionate about and ask how you can help their cause.”

Katelyn Island Savings Community Crew

Katelyn Parsons, 16 years, Mill Bay

"In the next 5 years I hope to be learning more about myself and the world. I have a dream of travelling the world but I also know that I’m not going to put my love for the arts away. I love my job with Island Savings! When I’m the Camp Leader at the Cowichan Green Community’s Kids Camp I feel as though I’m a student learning how to grow crops and turn them into a meal. I’ve learned how to cook and how to communicate with the kids.”

Athena Island Savings Community Crew

Athena Horwood, 16 years, Mill Bay

“Through my internship with Big Brothers Big Sisters I have learned how to be a mentor to young girls and to be able to provide quick problem solving answers. In the future I would like to become a social worker and help kids in challenging situations. My Island Savings Crew is like my second family, I enjoy all the events we participate in for the community and waking up knowing I’m going to work to have a great day.”

Kara Island Savings Community Crew

Kara Labelle, 17 years, Cobble Hill

“Through my internship with the Cowichan Basket Society I have experienced what community care entails. While enabling me to help those less fortunate in the Cowichan Valley, the program has enhanced my appreciation of everyday aspects we may have taken for granted (i.e. food, a house, friends and Family). It has revealed a network of people eager to support their community and has taught me the value of compassion, empathy and kindness.”

Meg Island Savings Community Crew

Meg Erwin, 17 years, Duncan

“I try to make others happy as much as possible. Over Spring Break this year I flew to Ecuador on a volunteer trip with a small group from my school. Our main project was to build a school with a local community. Although we were only there for a short time, talking to the kids and working together for such a great cause was the most rewarding and humbling experience. Nonprofit organizations play such a big part in our community, and everyone can do something to help.”

Kalli Island Savings Community Crew

Kalli King, 16 years, Cowichan Bay

“In the next five years, I hope to see myself at the University of Edinburgh or Acadia University getting my bachelor in Musical Therapy and Musical Psychology. After that I hope to work with elderly who suffer from Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and try to help trigger memories through music, hopefully one day starting my own business. I also could see myself working with kids who have mental and physical disabilities by providing them a music program to help them feel more involved.”
