Island Savings announces partnership with Thunder Rugby

July 4, 2018

DUNCAN, B.C. Island Savings, a division of First West Credit Union is proud to partner with Thunder Rugby in support of their 5th annual Thunder Rugby Camp, a four-day training camp running from July 4-7 and capped off by the Thunder 7’s tournament on Saturday.

"This is the 5th year of the Thunder Rugby Camp for Indigenous Youth at Shawnigan Lake School and we appreciate their generosity in hosting the event,” says Camp Director, John Lyall, “We appreciate Island Savings support this year making it possible to provide scholarships for players who can't afford the cost of attending. It also allows us to expand the cultural component of the program, this year we were able to offer a drum making workshop to camp participants.  Na’tsa’ maht  - We are all one. "

The camp is aimed at U15-U19 girls and boys from across the island.

“Sport can be an incredibly powerful tool in the development of our youth,” says Randy Bertsch, President of Island Savings. “This partnership enables us to support the great work that Thunder Rugby is undertaking to enhance the growth of indigenous youth in our community.”

Every year there's a cultural component of the rugby camp as well. This year, participants will learn the traditional art of drum making from Sts’ailes First Nations member Darren Charlie. Under Darren’s guidance, each participant will create their own drum which allows them the opportunity to learn about the indigenous culture in a fun and engaging way
